Why you're knackered and what to actually do about it

I don't think I've ever met a woman who isn't busy.

And busy is okay. Busy is normal. Most of us are busy.

But life is not set up to refill your energy levels. It is very much set up to use them.

So this is what I do with every single client, four things, in this order, that give them more energy.

Because when the energy is there, everything else gets easier.

Including making decisions.

1. Values and yes, this is always first.

People come to me expecting food stuff. Habit trackers. Meal plans.

I come back with - what actually matters to you and in what order?

When your day to day life is a bit out of alignment with what you actually care about, even slightly, even in ways that are hard to put your finger on, it drains your energy.

Physically. Mentally. Emotionally.

And when you get clear on your values and start making decisions that reflect them, energy comes back. Not because anything magic happened. Because you stopped using energy to fight yourself.

It underpins everything else we do.

2. Exercise. Stay with me.

Energy produces energy.

That's it really.

The key is finding movement you actually enjoy. Not what you think you should be doing. Not what the women on Instagram are doing at 5am.

What will you actually turn up for on a Wednesday evening when you're busy and it's raining?

A walk. A club run. Pilates. Strength training.

Whatever it is - find it, do it regularly, feel the difference.

You'll keep going back.

Trust me.

3. Sleep and rest (these are not the same thing).

There are seven types of rest. Sleep is only one of them.

Physical, mental, sensory, emotional, social, creative and spiritual.

This is always a great moment with clients. Because you might be sleeping fine but still feel exhausted and it’s because you aren’t getting enough of the other types of rest.

I had a client recently who was physically resting (she had a chest infection, so sofa only). But she's a musician and couldn't play. No creative outlet, no spiritual rest. And she had no energy.

Because what she actually needed wasn't more lying down.

As an introvert, social rest is the big one for me. Time that's just mine, no one needing anything. That's what fills my cup right back up.

For an extrovert it's the opposite.

It's worth having a think about which type of rest you're actually low on. It might surprise you.

4. Supplements. Last for a reason.

This is not where we start. This is where we finish.

Vitamin D, omega-3, a good multivitamin, creatine, yes, they can help and we do look at them. But they work best once everything else is in place.

Get the other three right first. Then the supplements have something to actually work with.

More energy means better decisions. More of the things you want to be doing. Less of the stuff you do on autopilot when your tank is low.

It's why energy is always where I start.
