I am 100% that friend that gives a care package to the new mum instead of a cute outfit for the baby.
I am 100% that accredited nutritionist that gives supplements in the care package too.
This is what my friend got this week from me.
Now I certainly am not against supplements, it's just they get so much advertising thrown at them, so much money and so much hype that taking this one pill will drastically change your life.
It's that whole quick (and easy) fix mentality.
When in fact I know that supplements are the cherry on top of the cake.
They certainly can help but not drastically.
Not like strength training or fixing your relationship with food can.
This is why when I have a new client come on board for 1-1 coaching I ask about their supplements and we go through them.
I LOVE the lightbulb moment when they realise how simple it could be and how much money they are going to save.
Because I only go off evidence.
Scientific papers.
Facts.
So here's what I advise -
- Vitamin D
- A good multivitamin
- Omega 3
- Creatine
That's it.
That's the blanket recommendation and that's what most women need.
I get my supplements from Tesco (with my club card obvs) or Boots as they are always 3 for 2.
I don't get them from social media. I don't use an influencers discount code.
I just whack them in my basket during the weekly shop.
Now some people - some being the word here might benefit from some additional supplementation such as magnesium for sleep, calcium for post-partum, inositol for PCOS.
If you would like bespoke supplementation advice drop me a message on social media and I can provide you with my recommendations.
You do not need collagen no matter how many ads you see.
The effects of taking it are very negligible, there are some small benefits, don't get me wrong but for the price of it, you really need to care a lot about skincare.
If you don't then don't bother.
I am a food first nutritionist so I would always advise getting nutrients from your food. Think of taking supplements as an insurance policy to make sure you are getting the dosage correct.
